Wofford Travels – 2019-10-29 – Fultondale, AL

Greetings,

This was a full driving day…continuing to the north for this phase of our trip.   We plan to meet up with the second of Tom’s college buddies at Florida State and his wife.  As before, I will use their initials:  Tom’s college friend “M” and his wife “K.”

Tom and M lived in Miami, Florida growing up.  They didn’t know each other then, but ended up meeting at FSU.  Both were History majors.  After college, they both ended up working for the Federal Government in Miami. M eventually went on to advance in his career in Washington DC.  Tom advanced his in Miami and then finally, in Greensboro, NC where we reside today.

We left the hotel at 11:00 with an ODO of 20,657 (2,907 miles).  It was a balmy 70 degrees.  Checking the gas prices:  $2.09. We made a rest stop an hour later at the Mississippi Welcome Center and got a map.  Around 2:30 we made a second stop at the Alabama Welcome Center and got their map as well.  Although we bring state maps with us, their currency is important as we learned from our Louisiana map, which had a “missing” interstate.  One had been built sometime in the 8 year since our last trip to that state!

By 4:00 we arrived in Tuscaloosa and chose the Asuka Buffet for dinner…to change the pace a bit.  The food was not bad.   Tom gave it a 6 out of 10 score.  My two critiques were that 1) most of the food sections weren’t labeled, so you didn’t always know what you were getting.  In fact, a number of the labels were wrong.  For me, this is critical because of the spice issue.  And, sure enough, I ended up getting a few of the spiced items; and 2) there weren’t any stand-alone cooked vegetables, which we always look for while eating on the road.  They were either raw or you had to extract them from the other meal items.  But, we didn’t leave hungry, of course, so all was good.

At 6:30 we stopped for gas ($2.16), and 15 minutes later we were at the Day’s Inn in Fultondale, our day’s destination.  ODO 21,014 (3,264 miles).

Tomorrow we visit M & K in Huntsville, Alabama.  And, I can guarantee, there will be lots of reminiscing.  These are wild, crazy guys…well, in a manner of speaking. Certainly, their humor is.  Should be fun!

Happy Birthday, Sis!
